There is this fascinating cactus called whortleberry. The cactus plant itself is not very intricate or noticeable...but once a year it gets these dark plum nubs (less than an 1/2 inch long) that eventually open to these translucent white flowers. You need to pay attention to see them. The flowers come in clusters and the contrast between the buds and the flowers is quite intoxicating.
